because he believed that Cluny had become too lax, too easy- going - the discipline was more
severe, the life harder in this house and it became the first monastic house of the Cistercian
order
Ivo of Chartres, 1040-1146
- at a time when things seemed pretty
lawless and arbitrary, Ivo began the formulation of “canon law” - church law that specified
what the church was supposed to do in certain situations
