Richard I, 1189-1199, “the
Lion-hearted”
- the greatest of medieval knights,
one of the worst English kings - he only visited England twice, in order to raise money - was
captured and held for ransom on his way home from the Third Crusade, and taxes were raised
very high to pay for his ransom
- his brother John “Lackland” had
control of some of the counties during this period - this is the time of Robin (Hood), Earl of
Locksley
