Lothair II, 1125-1137
- the bishops of Germany, after all
the fighting that had been going on with the pope, decided that it would be a bad thing to
elect Henry’s closest relative (Frederick of Swabia, of the house of Hohenstaufen), so they elected
Lothair of Saxony (of the house of Welf)
- Lothair ruled well and pacified the
country, but this set in motion a continuing battle, in Germany and Italy, between the two
rival houses, Hohenstaufen and Welf (or the Ghibilline and Guelf as they were
known in Italy)
