During the 4th Crusade, on April 12, 1204, the 4th Crusade, attacked, captured and looted the city of Constantinople (one of the leaders of the crusade, the ‘doge’ or leader of Venice wanted to eliminate Constantinople as a trading competitor) - until 1261, the Greek emperors had to withdraw to Greece, trying to expand and recover their power while Latin kings ruled in Constantinople

- an able and energetic general who was able to recapture  Constantinople
